Client Brief
Design a modern kitchen, living and dining area with the inclusion of marble, brass and black metal features.
For this bright open space, the clients requested a new kitchen, living, and dining area featuring marble, brass, and black-coated metal finishes. The North Parramatta property benefits from abundant natural sunlight, making it an ideal location for a kitchen designed for entertaining and providing access to an outdoor deck surrounding the pool.
To initiate the project, I created a Structural Design Cues Look and Feel board to capture the clients’ desires. This included a steep-pitched roof with bold arched windows in black steel and dual material finishes to enhance texture and form. The interior features high-pitched ceilings to highlight the exterior architecture and serve as a focal point. Timber flooring was chosen to provide contrast against the white walls and complement the materials used in the kitchen.
Starting with the kitchen design, I hand-sketched the layout to gain a better understanding of the allocated space for the kitchen and butler’s pantry. This facilitated the design of a large island bench with ample storage and a separate area for food preparation. These sketches were then scaled and translated into Revit for 2D documentation. This process allowed me to optimise the kitchen layout according to the triangle rule, ensuring the oven, sink, and fridge were within easy reach while maximising benchtop space for food preparation and entertaining. Once the joinery elements were modelled, I applied materials. The client’s request for marble was fulfilled with marble benchtops and splashbacks, while brass was used for tapware and lighting fixtures. Black-coated metal was incorporated as joinery handles and pulls, creating a cohesive look that echoed the window finishes throughout the home.
After completing the kitchen and butler’s pantry, I turned my attention to the living and dining areas, incorporating elements that connected to the kitchen design, such as a marble fireplace and dining tabletop, brass lighting fixtures, and black furniture accents like table legs and chairs. Once these spaces were finalised, I rendered them in Enscape to visually unify the kitchen, living, and dining areas, allowing clients to envision their new home. Additionally, an Enscape flythrough video was produced to further showcase the redesigned space.
