Client Brief
Design a partial knockdown rebuild extension with the inclusion of Tropical Colonial design styles.
Keeping to the following paragraph structure, provide a version without section titles that can be presented in my interior designers portfolio that will be reviewed by perspective employers.
Located in the waterfront suburb of Bellevue Hill, this project involved a partial knockdown rebuild extension that aimed to infuse a unique style into the home. The clients, having spent significant time in Hong Kong, desired a Tropical Colonial design that reflects their experiences and cultural influences.
To initiate the project, we met with the clients to establish a brief outlining their spatial requirements, style preferences, budget, layout requests, and desired details. This foundational discussion enabled me to create a Look and Feel package, which included an overall vision for the home, three kitchen style options, a living space concept, as well as options for the ensuite, bathrooms, laundry, and joinery. Each page was complemented by a small materials board, allowing the clients to visualise the materials typically associated with these styles. After receiving feedback on the Look and Feel package, we integrated their preferences into our design drawings.
Using Revit, I focused on producing detailed plans, elevations, and sections for each key room. The documentation process commenced with the kitchen, a vital space for the clients known for entertaining large groups. A spacious kitchen island was essential, not only for displaying food and drinks but also as a central conversational hub. To accommodate the need for ample storage, I designed two large full-height pantries along with numerous drawers and cupboards beneath and above the bench areas. Materials were applied to each surface, and the space was rendered in Enscape to enhance visualisation. Multiple style options were developed to gauge the clients’ preferred material combinations.
Following the completion of the kitchen, I turned my attention to the bathroom areas, starting with the downstairs ensuite, which emphasised the Tropical Colonial style. This bathroom serves as the clients' private space and connects to their walk-in wardrobe and bedroom. I created three different style options for this area, showcasing elements such as terracotta coloured tiles, lighter marble benches, and bolder marble selections with a blue-toned vanity and matching feature tile. Selected views of these spaces were rendered in Enscape for client presentation. A similar approach was taken for the upstairs bathrooms, which were designed with the preferences of the clients' young daughters in mind. To personalise these spaces, their favourite colours were incorporated into tile and vanity selections, fostering a sense of ownership in the overall design. The downstairs bathroom and laundry also featured two different style options each, maintaining the Tropical Colonial design while ensuring uniqueness across the areas. With each room meticulously drawn and all elements addressed, I focused on applying material tags, dimensions, fixture and equipment tags, notes, and annotations to the drawings.
These drawings and rendered images will be presented to the clients for further feedback, allowing us to refine each space to ensure their design aspirations are realised. This collaborative process will enable us to move forward with the project and ultimately create a home for this young family that embodies their vision of Tropical Colonial style.
