Located in Paddington, Sydney, recent empty-nesters Fletcher and Rosie Mann requested a redesign of their terrace residence. For this brief, I was tasked with creating a comprehensive drawing package for the property, which included existing and demolition plans, floorplans, furniture plans, reflected ceiling plans (RCP), sections, elevations, and details to accurately represent the home. The clients emphasised the importance of incorporating open-plan living into the design to facilitate a seamless flow between spaces, while also ensuring there were private retreats for the couple to enjoy.
To begin the spatial planning process, I examined the existing floorplans to identify the original layout of each level and locate key living areas such as the living and dining rooms, kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms. Using a blank floorplan, I sketched the new layout for each level, taking into account the clients' requests and the functionality of each space. This approach helped delineate the public and private realms of the home, allowing for a clear segregation of spaces.
The public realms of the home spanned the basement and ground levels, where guests would access the building from either the garage (basement) or the street level (ground floor). The basement was designed to accommodate the laundry and mudroom, a bathroom, a study desk, and a media room. The ground floor featured the living and dining rooms, as well as the kitchen and outdoor balcony. Levels 1 and 2 were designated as the private realms of the property, with Level 1 comprising a guest bedroom, a bathroom, and a two-seater office. Level 2 was designed as the couple’s retreat, featuring an open loft design that included the main bedroom, a walk-in robe (WIR), and an ensuite with double showers and a vanity.
