Located in the busy streets of The Rocks in Sydney, I was given the brief to redesign a newly purchased retail and office space. The chosen business was online plant store The Jungle Collective.

As The Jungle Collective was primarily an online store, I wanted to provide them with the opportunity to create a retail space on the ground floor, that would encourage the public to explore all that they have to offer, as well as develop a space upstairs on the first level for their Administrative and Sales teams to work from.

When designing the spaces, it was important to tie in their brand from a design perspective to help raise their brand awareness and showcase their fun and free-spirited brand values. At the beginning of the design process, I started by creating a brand board that featured the main elements of the company including their typography, brand colours, brand tag lines, and marketing materials. Research was conducted, with a specific focus given to gathering images of other retail plant shops, as well as open-plan office spaces which aided my moodboard creation.

Once the mood and inspiration boards were established, the development of floorplans took place across the two levels. For the retail space, careful consideration was given to incorporating key elements into the floorplan design, including a point-of-sale area, café, accessible bathrooms, and a retail area for displaying rare plants and planting accessories.

Taking inspiration from their tagline “Welcome to the jungle”, materiality concepts were developed incorporating various material and style choices that focused on the jungle theme. Careful consideration was given to the materials selected for the retail space to ensure they remained on brand but were also easy to clean due to plants creating a mess at times through the dropping of leaves and sap. I decided to implement earthy tones and materials into the space, utilising timbers, copper, and polished concrete to also ensure the materials would be durable due to the area and furniture being frequently used. Hanging plants were also incorporated into the space to complement the retail space and tie back to the business's core purpose of being a plant store. To tie in the tagline “Welcome to the jungle”, a jungle scape feature wallpaper was installed across 2 walls of the retail space, which also included toucans as a subtle nod to the jungle.

An open-plan layout was incorporated into both spaces to ensure consistency across the two levels, whilst also complementing the client's requirements. To complement the Jungle Collective's ethos, hanging plants were incorporated into the space, as were the timbers, copper, and polished concrete materials. The furniture colour selections subtly nodded to the brand colours incorporating shades of green into the space.
