Client Brief
Design 2 serviced apartments that have an adjoining movable wall, offering the capability to become one large space.
  • Modern design
  • Consistent materiality
  • Open plan living
  • Movable adjoining wall

Located in the Sydney suburb of Edgecliff, the Mnemosyne project features two large-scale serviced apartments designed for business and leisure travellers. The design process began by developing spatial planning ideas based on the unique angular floorplans, ensuring each space adhered to serviced apartment requirements. This exploration led to the creation of AutoCAD floorplans, allowing for better visualisation of the design. Concepts were further refined through inspiration image gathering and mood board creation, establishing a clear vision tailored to the apartments' needs.

Material selection was approached with care, focusing on durability to withstand use by various guests. Following this, detailed renderings of the spaces were completed to capture the envisioned design. A key aspect of the brief was the incorporation of a movable wall between the two apartments. This was achieved through double-stacking sliding doors that seamlessly slid into a cavity space behind the kitchen joinery, allowing the two apartments to function as one while providing a discreet way to hide the doors when opened. The spatial planning was thoughtfully executed to ensure that the doors opened onto communal areas, such as the kitchen, living, and dining spaces, rather than private areas like bedrooms or bathrooms.

Utilising the apartments' angles and floor-to-ceiling windows effectively was crucial in creating functional, luxurious spaces filled with natural light. While a generous open-plan living area was prioritised, the master suite in each apartment was designed as a personal retreat, allowing guests to unwind and relax away from home. The open-plan setting for the living and dining areas featured warm wood tones and neutral fabrics in upholstery, cushions, blankets, and sheer curtains, enhanced by greenery from various plants throughout the space. Long-lasting materials like marble and Caesarstone benchtops were incorporated to add a touch of luxury while ensuring suitability for the high-use environment.
